NS AS Line

NS's AS Line, also known as the Asheville District, runs between Morristown, TN, and Salisbury, NC. There's two road freights that run west of Asheville as well as locals that run east and pass over the Old Fort Loops. It used to see daily coal traffic and more freight traffic up until 2019.

Old Fort Loops - Andrews Geyser

NS AS Line, Milepost 116.5

A westbound empty coal ascending the loops- in a couple minutes it will pass this upper loop
A westbound coal on the second major loop
This location gives you access to a small exposed section of the loops, but the best shot by far is via drone. With a drone you can see trains passing the whole upper loop. You'll hear westbounds coming several minutes in advance because of the grade. As of mid-2026 this spot only gets 2 pairs of coal trains a week, and they don't run on a schedule.
